The fix starts with measuring, because almost every setup that goes wrong goes wrong when somebody turns the truss rod to solve a problem the truss rod does not control.

Three things determine how an acoustic plays: neck relief, saddle height and nut slot depth. They must be checked in that order, because each one changes the reading of the next.

Step 1: measure the relief

Relief is the slight forward bow in the neck. You are not trying to make the neck straight — a dead straight neck buzzes, because a vibrating string swings in an arc and needs room in the middle.

Capo at the first fret. Hold the low E down at the fourteenth, where the neck meets the body. The string is now a straight edge running the length of the fretboard. Look at the gap between the bottom of the string and the top of the seventh fret.

You want roughly 0.010″ (0.25 mm) — about the thickness of a business card slid under the string. If you can rock the string against the fret with no gap at all, the neck is too straight. If there is obvious daylight, there is too much bow.

Step 2: measure the action at the twelfth fret

Only now is this number meaningful. Stand the ruler on the twelfth fret and measure from the top of the fret to the bottom of the string.

A typical acoustic factory spec is around 5/64″ (2.0 mm) on the treble E and 3/32″ (2.4 mm) on the bass E. The bass side sits higher on purpose, because a low E swings in a wider arc than a top E.

Step 3: do the saddle arithmetic before you sand anything

Work on flat sandpaper laid on glass, keep the saddle square, and check the fit repeatedly. Sanding is not reversible, so approach the number from above and stop early — you can always take another pass. Leave enough saddle standing proud of the bridge to keep a firm break angle over it; a saddle sanded down until it barely clears the slot loses volume and can rattle.

Step 4: check the nut, which is a different problem entirely

If the guitar plays comfortably up the neck but first-position chords are a fight and sound sharp, the nut slots are cut too high. This has nothing to do with the saddle and is not fixed by lowering it.

Test it: fret a string at the third fret and look at the gap over the first fret. You want a hair of clearance — visible, but only just. If the string is sitting well clear, the slot is shallow enough that the open string is being stretched sharp every time you fret near the nut.

This is the one step worth handing over. Nut slots need gauged files, the cuts must follow the correct back angle towards the tuners, and a slot cut too deep means a new nut. It is a cheap job at a repair shop and an expensive mistake at home.
